I finally had the chance to watch the new Girl skate video that Spike Jonze worked on and it is killer. Seeing that I haven't seen a skate video in about 7 years, it is interested to see how they have progressed. Girl's old video "Goldfish (a total classic-came out in '95 or so) was in regular rotation in my parent's VCR (much to their chagrin) for most of my middle and high school life, so my curiosity was peaked when my friend Marisa floated this over to me.
Although I couldn't do a fakie heelflip to save my life, I always admired skaters' collective ability to re-interpret boring landscapes (curbs, gaps between two sidewalks, picnic benches, etc) and turn them into sacred ground. It appears most those spots are still really popping. As I watched the first 30 minutes of the video, I recognized a ton of Cali skate landmarks that appear in "Yeah Right" from old Plan B and Blind videos.
What is really interesting is the way in which skate videos have overcome the limitations of location shooting to create some really tight shit in terms of post production. There's this segment in "Yeah Right" where they edit out the skateboard and have all their riders doing tricks on an invisible board. It looks like dudes are just seemlingly jumping on to benches and rails in a Spiderman-like fashion. Most impressive. Other highlights include the always brilliant Mike Carroll and some of newer faces on the Girl subsidiary,Chocolate's, team. Definitely worth a look if you are an old head who bailed out after they saw "Kids".
the segment where they edit out the skateboard, how's sound is that

The best part of the video is it's use of special effects sections, usually marked by someone saying "Yeah Right!" or by it being written somewhere. These parts are great, from guys skating without boards (very cool), a trippy "Skatrix" part, and actor Owen Wilson talking trash and skating.
