xxxx VISION

the Double at the knitting factory - I managed to creep into the double's after they were about two songs deep and was happy to see the boys nervously (it's part of their charm) plow their way through the remainder of their set. At their best, the Double round out electronic ticks and tacks with hooks that run up and down before landing squarely on your hips. It's odd to think that a band that swirls and dives can drive home a killer chorus that is as hard to place as the perfect grey shade of a worn-in sweater. The ingredients of their sound (confused beeps, steady basslines and jackhammer drumming) can easily be whipped into a snoozefest if placed in the wrong hands, but tonight the Double struck that rare balance between floating and falling. The noise hovers overhand before crashing down and making you realize that you might recognize this song—perhaps you heard it before, but perhaps you're like me and have just been listening to a shitload of Talking Heads lately. Both bands straddle that line between glassy guitar lines (can someone please holler at the guitar sound on "Uh Oh, Love Comes To Town"?) and an honest to goodness LORD I AM GOING TO SMASH THESE FUCKERS AS HARD AS I CAN WITH A DRY KISS pop sensibility. Let's hope the kids are ready to pucker up before these dudes wind up being mythologized twenty years from now by arty kids digging for kicks at Old Man Downtown's house of noise. Ride on.
