Shot by documentary filmmaker Don Pennebaker during the Dylz's 1965
tour of England—his last as a strictly acoustic performer and his first
as a true-to-earth but closer to the heavens pop star—this is the
portrait of the young man that launched a thousand sneers and lit a
thousand cigarettes.
A mix of aburdist media showman and cloud-hopping musical visionary, Dylan's the most magnetic actor that never was and his supporting cast—Donovan, Joan Baez, Alan Price and Big Al Grossman—is nothing to sneeze at either. The cinema verite fly-on-the wall off-stage footage of Bobby putting on journos, playing Hank Williams songs and generally being the coolest motherfucker that ever was is worth the price of admission, but his performances of "To Romana", "Gates Of Eden" and "It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)" are on straight-up biblical time.
To put the whole thing in more managable terms, if you go out to see this, you can see where INXS got the whole placecard idea from. That's true.
