It's On
Hello everyone. It's good to be back! Granted, the first-ever Simple Mission holiday break wasn't just about 3AM Chipwich runs and self-imposed Larry David DVD viewing exiles, but my memory of this time is a 'lil foggy. So... I'm going to start with this past Friday and work forward from there.
Let me say this: there's either a massive interest in Russia art (not mad at that) or DJ Diplo is seriously one of the most famous turntable czars around. His performance at the Flavorpill-curated First Friday at the Guggenheim was seriously off the chain. Over 3,000 people (fact check?) turned out to hear "the DJ's DJ's DJ" mix of eleclicta and internationalist boom boom. They even danced. In a museum.
Granted, Dr Dip played a pretty conventional set by his standards (Gwen Stefani, New Order, Brazilian funk jams, J-Kwan), but even when he's being safe, his turntable vocab is still crazily diverse. Props to the Gully one for providing an excellent soundtrack to taking in Constructivist art—and for dropping "Laffy Taffy" just when everybody seemed to need to hear it the most. Prop Off!
Saturday's Kyp Malone/Celebration/Double show at the Bowery was top notch top to bottom, but you might have to wait a day or so to get the scoop on that. I've leaked it another source. Stay locked here to get the whole story.
Following a fruitless afternoon of record shopping, I swung over to the teaser opening of the brand new, all weird and entirely awesome Voodoo Eros space on Ludlow St to check what Militia S and Sierra's latest venture. It's set to open proper in February and will be selling various musics from Voodoo Eros and their extended family of artists and musicians, handmade clothing and lots of other desirable commodities. I'll wear the dunce cap for missing soul strutter Nomi's in-store set, but I got my fill of the delectable buttermilk coated fried tofu and coconut grits that they were serving at the party, so it was all good.
That's it for now. Check back tomorrow for some exclusive new music downloads from my back pages. Until then, stay strong and get ready for another year of good tune times.
